Also a novice, I recently purchased the Canon T1i after much research and recommendation. Even several professional photographers said that they often return to this camera as a beloved standby. So far so good!

I'm a novice and just got myself my very first DSLR Canon Rebel T2i... it is FABULOUS! I'm still learning but i love it...its not too bulky or heavy, but it makes you want to learn how to take better pictures. Love your blog & work by the way!

I love my Nikon... I am so expert either... I got the D60 and over time I have bought a couple lenses but actually I use the one it came with a lot. I took a class at our community college that was good for basic things. I know the Cannons are really good too... one of the things I know that Nikon can do is fit vintage lenses.

Also my sister who is going to film school got an amazing Nikon used and said that most the students to that which would save some money.

good luck! ox

I'm not a photographer, but I really enjoy taking pics! This is what I would recommend:

Any of the Canon Rebel's will work really well. I would suggest only buying the camera body and skip out on the packages with the other lenses. The kit lenses aren't very good in my opinion. Instead of the kit lenses, I would buy the 50 mm 1.8 lens. It' s a great lens for extremely cheap (we're talking $100)!

My next suggestion would be to then take an online course maybe from Nicole Hill, or search on Google or buy the book Understanding Exposure and begin to learn to shoot in manual. It takes some practice, but will really help your photos. The Rebels will take really nice pictures in Auto mode as well, but manual looks even better then Auto!

I will also say that the canon rebel series (any of the versions but the t1i/t2i have VIDEO!) are great. and... you can get them at costco with lenses and a bag for a STEAL.

I think the learning curve on canon is much easier than nikon. I personally prefer canon's lens range.

I have a Nikon D3000 and LOVE it! The manual guide is practically built in, so it's super easy to use and a great camera for beginners. I was always partial to Cannons because that is what my point and shoot is, but I am loving the Nikon just as much!

I am not a novice but I love my Canon Rebel xsi. It is so easy to use and takes awesome photos. I thought about getting the one with video but we have a Flip video camera that is so easy to use and I think a must have with kids. Good luck!

a nikon d90 would be great. easy to use. i would then put a 50 1.4 or 50 1.8 on that baby. it will all come in under a grand. another camera would work just make sure you can change lenses. B & H has the best prices too.

I TOTALLY agree with the 50 mm f/1.8 recommendation. Your photos will instantly improve using that lens. Also, I must recommend the book "Understanding Exposure" by Bryan Peterson. Definitely cheaper than taking an online class...it will teach you how your camera works and how to shoot a beautiful image in any situation. And then there's always Photoshop, but I digress...
